The past few months have seen Lauren and myself busy settling into life. Its been an adventure in and of itself.
For example, changing a name. Its darn hard to change someone's name. In fact, I still am not quite sure who Lauren officially is. We discovered that paying $50 for a marriage license in Glenn County actually is not sufficient for you to get a copy of it back. No. You have to pay 13 additional dollars for that privilege. We finally got ours, and now its on its way to the Social Security Administration, where *hopefully* it will speed its way through the bureaucratic jungle and make its way back to us, so that we can get her driver's license changed, and then I can stop wondering about her official identity.
I have, to my mild surprise, been able to meet my Rescue Squad commitments for the past months as well. I have been good to Lauren though - Only half a shift over my assigned number last Sunday morning. Considering my previous record, that's not too shabby. A lot of my "reduced" amount of running has to do with the fact that we now live about 20 minutes away from Purcellville, so its not as convenient to run at the station as it used to be. Even if it does have a 52 inch flatscreen tv with surround sound. One minor note of interest is that I was asked to serve on one of our committees over at Company 14. These are supposed to help our poor chief, so she doesn't have to do everything herself. So now I help review membership applications, and talk about recruiting. Its actually really interesting, and I'm excited about the opportunity to help out in this way. Interesting calls since I last wrote: Finger "amputation", a nice laceration, and something that went out as "person hit by a vehicle" but actually should have gone out as "person dragged by a vehicle" where a girl got her leg caught up under the dashboard of a Honda Element and was dragged backwards for a few feet. Don't ask.
Another cool thing in my life is the motorcycle! I took a class out here the weekend before my wedding, and got licensed that week. (good thing, cause we ended up renting a scooter on St. John!) That has been some of the most fun I've had in a long time. There's not much that can compare to going [unspecified mph] with no jacket on. Its been a lot of fun, and Lauren loves it. (haha, i win.) The weather has been nice for the most part out here, so I use it to commute into work a lot. Which is good, because it costs me all of $15 to fill the tank of that thing up on a bad day, and it goes just as far if not farther on a tank of gas than the Durango. So that's been helpful. This past weekend we took it out and just drove all around Ashburn and Sterling. Lots of good fun. Soon we are hoping to do a day trip to DC on it, via the Georgetown Pike. That should be beautiful.
I'm settling in at work - its also starting to pick up. We have this massive load of data from January '05 until now that I have to enter into our brand new custom-made database. Yay. Except not. It takes a lot longer than I thought it would, but hopefully if I keep at it it will be mostly done in a month. (hahaha). The really cool part of this job is all the stuff that I get to be privy to, and learn from - investigations, policy making, and other compliance issues. I still feel like I'm on the cutting edge of what's going on here, and that's an exciting thing to be a part of.
I have finished my second-to-the-last semester of law school!! I'm pretty happy about that - I'll be done in May. Part of me is quite happy about it, and part of me is freaking out, because I only have a few short months to crank out my lovely senior paper. But its all good, and I'll get it done - at least, I always have, so I assume the same luck will apply in this instance. I'm looking forward to this semester though, just like always. Hopefully, not like always, I will actually study the material. I keep finding out at finals that I love the stuff I'm learning, but by then I'm so busy cramming I don't have the time to savor it. This semester I have one class that I'm especially excited about - Alternative Dispute Resolution. Sounds impressive, right? Basically I get to practice negotiations, and non-litigation resolutions to disagreements. Pretty sweet.
One of the cool things about working in a legal department as a law student is all the lawyers will of course share their war stories from law school with you, and commiserate with you. Its interesting to see the different perspectives of the attorneys who work here as opposed to my previous place of employment. One of the classes I just finished was Professional Responsibility, which is something that effects every single attorney, so I got to hear a lot of stories about that.
Well, I guess that's about it for now. I felt guilty about not posting anything at all on here, and very nearly just let this thing die of natural causes. As it is, I think I'll give it at least one more shot.
